What is clinical psychology?

Clinical psychology is a speciality that includes clinical aspects of psychology. Clinical psychology’s main concern is treating people with mental illness, depressive states, and health risk behaviours, which can only be resolved by treatment or can only be cured by treatment. Clinical psychologists always handle severe cases of schizophrenia, psychosis etc. Most of these diseases require specialised treatment (such as EMDR), which can only be performed by a licensed doctor or specialist in the field.

The client base of clinical psychologists mainly consists of mentally ill people. His work is mostly confined to hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centres. When it comes to the research area, a clinical psychology job goes hand-in-hand with medicine. Developing new drugs for psychological disorders and finding explanations for specific behaviours through neuroscience are some of the important areas of clinical psychology research. In certain situations, a clinical psychologist may refer a patient to a counselling psychologist at a later stage in the treatment process, which can be addressed with behavioural therapy and personality development.
